Rhino preservation heads heritage focus

Kingsley Holgate the main attraction at five-day Inkwazi Boardwalk heritage, tourism and rhino exhibition

LEGENDARY explorer Kingsley Holgate will be the main attraction at the Boardwalk Inkwazi shopping centre during a five-day focus on tourism, heritage and conservation.

Holgate will have plenty of support on ‘Ubhejane Day’ (World Rhino Day, 22 September), when the emphasis will be on protection of this highly endangered national asset.

This includes the presence of the life-size rhino figure ‘Ralston’ as well as ‘Mashozi’, the signature-filled expedition Land Rover showcasing solidarity against an international conservation crisis.

The Project Rhino KZN team will arrive in force and the area around House & Home will be transformed into ‘bush’ thanks to landscaping arranged by the Rhinoceros Unanimous team.

Kingsley will also display the touching Rhino Art pictures drawn by children in RSA, Swaziland and Mozambique during his recent Izintaba Zobombo Expedition, while local children will have a place to colour their own rhino pictures on the day.

He will also recount some of his experiences during the expedition.

Well-known local artist Joe Marais has offered to do a giant rhino painting on site, and the Thanda Royal Zulu FC squad are expected to add their presence.

Big screen TVs will showcase efforts made to counteract the rhino poaching pandemic.

Various fund-raising initiatives will take place, including sale of African arts and crafts, a rhino painting raffle for the Thula Thula rhino orphan rehabilitation centre and sale of bumper stickers and crosses.

Lucky dip prizes and competitions will add a fun element.

Other activities at the shopping centre over the period include:

• 20 September – Miss Tourism Queen Zululand 2013 contest, with guest judge Fikile Mekgoe (Mrs South Africa 2013).

• 20, 21 and 22 September – Travel and leisure tourism exhibitions throughout the centre

• 21 and 22 September – Zikulise Community Upliftment Project art and craft workshops with Joe Marais outside the House & Home area between 11am -2pm.

• 24 September – Heritage Day ‘Taste of the World Fest’ outside entrance 4, from 11am-2pm.
