Surfing celebration in Richards Bay

South Africa's best surfers will embark on Richards Bay in three weeks time for the Citroën SA Surfing Championships

IN just three weeks time, Richards Bay will be hosting the Citroën SA Surfing Championships.

This event is a surfing celebration, not only for local surfers, who are thrilled at having such a major event on home soil for the first time, but for the whole country as South African surfing celebrates its 50th anniversary this year.

The Citroën SA Surfing Championships takes place from 2 to 9 August.

This 50th edition of the SA Championships will combine with the 10th South African Masters Championships and will feature seven teams of surfers from around the country competing for South African titles as well as team bragging rights.

Among the surfers competing are eight world champions, at least 12 current national champions, as well as a number of national team members and provincial champions.

Local stars

Hosts, uThungulu Surfriding, have their fair share of stars particularly in the Masters Divisions and are looking at not only putting on a great event, but walking off with the trophies on offer with some home ground advantage.

Fred le Roux, team coach and current SA Champion in the Grand Kahunas Division will be joined by previous national champions Tamarys de Maroussem (Women and O30 Women), Vince King and Mike Frew (O40 Men), Robin Lavery (O50) and the rest of the team stacked with former finalists, young bloods and multi-discipline achievers.

Over the next six months the Surfing South Africa’s 50th celebrations will focus on the 50th South African Surfing Championships, the Coreban SUP Championships in Cape Town, the SA Bodyboarding Championships in Richards Bay, the Billabong Junior Surfing Championships in Jeffreys Bay, the Quiksilver Get Free contest in Port Alfred, the Billabong Women’s Surf Challenge in Ballito, several Adaptive Surfing Days, the Earthwave Beach Festival as well as participation by the South African Junior Team, Adaptive Surfing Team and Masters team in their respective ISA World Championships.
