Five year-old girl dies after attack
uMhlali police arrested a 19-year-old man for murder and kidnapping.
A FIVE-YEAR OLD girl of Etete, uMhlali, who was abducted, possibly raped and left for dead in a storm water drain, succumbed to her injuries in hospital.
Her aunt reported to police that she discovered the little girl was missing in the early hours of Sunday morning when she went to wake her up for her daily chores.
Following a search of the surrounding areas, the toddler was discovered alive, but severely injured in a storm water drain.
She was rushed to hospital, where she died.
KZN Police Commissioner, Lt Gen Mmamonnye Ngobeni, said a post mortem will be conducted to establish the cause of death and whether she was raped.
Following an intensive investigation, uMhlali police arrested a 19-year-old man for murder and kidnapping.
Further charges are expected to be added depending on the outcome of the post mortem.
He appeared in the uMhlali periodic court on Tuesday and the matter has been remanded for a formal bail application on Monday.
His name cannot be released until he has pleaded.
