PLANS are in place to revive CCTV cameras within the City to alleviate criminal activity, this according to City of uMhlathuze Traffic Superintendent Johan Plaatjies at the Community Policing Forum (CPF) meeting in Empangeni on Tuesday.
As part of the integrated ‘safer City’ plan, Plaatjies said a Crime Prevention Unit, separate from traffic law enforcement, is in the process of being established, which will eventually work together with the police.
‘We also intend to introduce crime prevention endeavours in the green belts where in dark areas lights will be erected, and grass cut in places where it is overgrown,’ Plaatjies said.
To the delight of those in attendance, it was also announced that bicycle patrols will be addressed in the new financial year in hopes of discouraging crime.
Business Against Crime Manager Dave Whittaker shared with the community the importance of investing in a basic vehicle tracking device, while SAPS Captain Bonginkosi Dludla reported on the continuous increase of theft out of motor vehicles.
‘People are very careless with their valuable items and often walk off before locking their vehicles and ensuring they are in fact secured,’ said Captain Dludla.
The next CPF meeting will be held on Thursday, 23 July at the Empangeni Council Chambers at 5.30pm, for more information contact Chairperson Zilindile Masango on 082 5916302.
