Project to groom top achievers

AN eNseleni school principal has taken an initiative to boost the district’s top matric achievers.

He has created a radical plan to accelerate results in uThungulu to see more pupils feature at the annual national top achievers awards.

Tholokuhle High School headmaster – Mr V Hlatshwayo, is driving the ‘Principals for Excellence Siyaya Project – Pentagon Stars of 2015’ with 30 school principals from uThungulu, who want to see top achievers go beyond the district and provincial top academic awards ceremony and be among the national award recipients.

At a meeting earlier this year, the principals formulated an action plan to highlight their top five students, challenging subjects and outline solutions.

Chairperson of the project, Hlatshwayo said the Department of Education wants to see more matrics earn Bachelor’s Degree passes and the project strives to assist increase these results and have more of our local pupils among the national achievers.

‘We have arranged special classes for only the top five of each school, which is taking place every Saturday at Richem Secondary School in Empangeni, where dedicated subject specialists are offering tuition.

‘However the principals have another programme directed at the entire school, known as marathon subject sessions, which will be run through clustering schools and focusing on one or two subjects for the whole day.

‘Tutors are so determined to the see pupils excel, they are here every Saturday to conduct the sessions.

‘Sessions are hosted at different schools and transport is required for the students, we are appealing to any businesses or corporates to assist with sponsorships towards transport.

‘We will also appreciate the support of parents to ensure pupils have transport to attend the weekend classes,’ he said.
