A YOUNG ‘deejay’ who raped his victims after insisting he was removing ‘bad luck’ from them, faced the music at eSikhawini Regional Magistrate’s Court on Friday.
Sboniso Mthembu (22) was positively identified by four students of the University of Zululand (Unizulu) in 2012, as the man who promised them jobs, but then viciously sexually assaulted them outside campus.
Evidence revealed that Mthembu lured his first victim to a house at Ngujini area in January 2012. The woman broke down when she recalled how she had to be admitted to Ngwelezana Hospital after the incident.
The second victim escaped naked from the clutches of the rapist, from a cottage at Matholonjeni Reserve in May of 2012.
‘He demanded I undress, put muthi in a basin with water and wash my body. He went out to look for protection, and that’s when I saw an opportunity to escape from the house,’ she said.
Mthembu’s last victim, said she was raped for two days in a house at Vulindlela in August of 2012.
‘He applied lime lotion to by body that made me weak. I couldn’t move or do anything, and then he raped me time and time again. He kept saying, ‘I’m helping you,’ she said.
According to all victims, Mthembu was constantly on his cellphone during these incidents, insisting he was instructed by his grandfather who is a sangoma, to remove ‘bad luck’ from them.
He was arrested and charged with three counts of rape and one of attempted rape, after the matter was referred to the police by university security.
Mthembu was sentenced to 25 years on the first count, and 10 years for the attempted rape, however, acquitted on two counts of rape regarding his last victim. The ten years will run concurrently with the first 25 years.
