UPDATE: 5 in court for eSikhawini cop’s murder

Police officer strangled to death in holding cells identified.

WARRANT Officer and cell commander Johannes Ngwane (54) of Hluhluwe had been conducting his usual rounds when prisoners attacked and strangled him, leaving him in a critical condition.

Although he was rushed to the nearest clinic, Empangeni SAPS spokesperson Captain Mbongeni Mdlalose confirmed the officer succumbed to his injuries.

The five suspects who were awaiting trial for armed robbery and housebreaking, have now been charged with murder and are expected to make their first appearance at the Esikhawini Magistrate Court today (Monday).

According to Mdlalose, one cell generally holds eight inmates but owing to court referrals, the cells are often overcrowded.
