City lowers water pressure
uMhlathuze implements ‘Level 3’ water restrictions.

THE effects of the current drought have been passed onto residents as the City of uMhlathuze implements water restrictions through reduced water pressure.
Last week, consumers received municipal text messages informing them that Level 3 water restrictions would come into effect immediately until further notice.
This entails a technical precautionary move to lower water pressure by 50% to all households in the evening non-peak period, between 8pm and 5am.
City Manager: Communications, Mdu Ncalane said by lowering the pressure, less water would be pumped in a given period of time.
‘It does not mean we will be cutting water supply to households.
‘The water sources are continuing to drop. People must be aware of the restrictions and understand the critical situation we are facing.
‘We have been preaching the gospel of water saving and are now compelled to impose restrictions.
‘Some residents may not even notice that the pressure has been reduced,’ Ncalane said.
Restrictions
Level 3 restrictions require a 70% cut in water usage by the agricultural sector, 30% by domestic users and 10% by industry.
When water restrictions were first instituted on 1 February, consumers faced level 1 restrictions, comprising a 50% cut by agriculture, 10% by domestic users and 5% by industry.
‘We will strive by all means to supply water to all consumers and in return, they must assist us in saving water.
‘We can live without electricity but not without water.
‘The Goedertrouw Dam is at very low levels and water users must bear with us in our attempts to save water,’ Ncalane said.
