Gun robber killed in shoot-out

The man pulled out a knife and stabbed the police officer, wounding him slightly.

A MAN was shot and killed by police after he had robbed an off-duty police officer of his service pistol.

The Nkandla police officer was travelling from his Kwa-Khoza residence to eShowe when he stopped to give a neighbour, Sbekelelo Zungu (40), a lift.

Zungu pulled out a knife and stabbed the police officer, wounding him slightly.

In the struggle the police officer drew his firearm in self-defence, but the attacker grabbed it and fled.

The police officer contacted the eShowe SAPS who came to his assistance.

Zungu was known to the police and the officers went to his house. As the police vehicle entered Zungu’s homestead, he opened fire.

They returned fire, fatally wounding him.

The Independent Police Investigation Directorate (IPID) has been contacted and is investigating the incident.
