THE 121 Umfolozi TVET College students arrested during unrest at the Richtek campus on Wednesday appeared in a makeshift court at the Richards Bay Police Station on Friday morning.
Charged with public violence and destruction of property, the 108 female and 13 male students were conditionally released, with the state not asking that bail be set.
They were warned to appear at the Richards Bay Magistrate’s Court on 24 July, failing which warrants for their arrest will be issued.
Family members and scores of youthful sympathisers gathered in front of the police station, in support of those arrested.
They had earlier unsuccessfully tried to get Section 4 public gathering approval, and were dispersed by police.
The Richtek campus remains closed and the administration will meet with parents on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday morning to again explain the allocation of NSF (National Student Financial Aid Scheme) free bursaries and other possible funding.
