Grantleigh claims hockey crown
Grantleigh U13 A girls won the Tiger Wheel & Tyre Junior Open Girls Hockey Tournament.
GRANTLEIGH School’s U13 A girls hockey side beat Mtunzini Primary 3-1 in a penalty shoot-out to win the Tiger Wheel & Tyre Junior Open Girls Hockey Tournament hosted by Felixton College on Friday at Addison Park.
After a thrilling final that ended in a goalless draw, it was Grantleigh who remained cool under pressure to claim the crown and bragging rights for 2015.
Seven schools (eight teams) competed in the third annual tournament.
Pool A was made up of Felixton College 1, Mtunzini Primary, Richards Bay Christian School and Empangeni Preparatory, with Pool B comprising Felixton College 2, Grantleigh, St Catherine’s School and Hluhluwe Privaat Skool.
Teams competed in a round robin within their pool, playing 18-minute one-way games.
The winner from Pool A played the runner-up from Pool B and vice-versa.
Grantleigh beat Felixton College (1) 1-0 in the first semi-final.
St Catherine’s and Mtunzini played out to a goalless draw in the second semi-final.
After no goals in extra time, both teams went into a penalty shoot-out, which resulted in Mtunzini progressing with a 2-1 score.
