Rural sporting talent identified

Rural athletes competed in the U13 Transnet Foundation Games at the uMhlathuze Sports Complex.

ATHLETES from rural primary schools within the uThungulu District were invited to compete at the U13 Transnet Foundation Games held on Saturday at the uMhlathuze Regional Sports Complex in Richards Bay.

The aim of the event, hosted by Transnet in conjunction with the Department of Education, was to identify and further develop the sporting talent from rural communities.

‘We try to earmark a child with great talent in their sporting code, then assist them to attend necessary training camps, academies or clubs to further develop their talent,’ said Transnet Senior Manager: Sport Portfolio, Michael Moloto.

The children competed in athletics, chess, netball and soccer. An uThungulu team was also chosen for each sporting code that will compete in the National Transnet Foundation Tournament in Johannesburg in October.
