School peaks on recycling

An impressive total of 320kg of paper was supplied by Floraton Primary.

FLORATON Primary recently received a thumbs-up from Mpact Recycling, for the amount of recycled paper the pupils had collected.

An impressive total of 320kg of paper was supplied by the school, after Mpact’s mascot, Ronnie Recycler re-launched the school’s paper pick-up programme.

The school’s Principal, Denise Williams said, ‘Each pupil was provided with a small Ronnie Bag to take home and fill up with recyclable paper such as old newspapers, magazines, letters, junk mail, envelopes and even cardboard packaging.

‘These bags were collected on a weekly basis and the waste material was then placed into a dedicated Ronnie Bank.’

She went on to say that their recycling habits will not stop any time soon, and the school plans to go out further to recycle other types of waste.

Mpact Recycling’s Communications Manager, Donna-Mari Noble said, ‘We were very impressed by the pupils’ recycling activities and we want to encourage them to keep up their recycling efforts, as every little bit helps.

‘We’re very excited about this initiative because it has a positive effect at several levels. Not only does it provide a vehicle to dispose of waste paper and cardboard from the pupils’ homes, but it also creates excitement around recycling and getting their school involved, and ultimately, prevents landfills being filled up with waste paper,’ she said.

In addition to the programme educating the youth about the importance of recycling, it also assists the schools in their fund-raising efforts.

The school paper pick-up programme is gaining momentum throughout SA.
