Paddlers meander down to the river mouth in Tugela Raft Race

Raft Race goes ahead despite low river levels.

THE 47th Tugela Raft Race was paddled on an extremely low river on Saturday, with participants having to make their way around massive sand banks.

Whereas the paddlers normally had a reasonably straight run to the river mouth, this year the distance could have at least doubled as they meandered down to the river mouth.

The river flow was also very slow, making paddling or towing necessary to make any progress down the river.

The iconic event takes place annually between Mandeni and the Tukhela River mouth.
