Liza hooks catch of the day
The formidable Liza Labuschagne bagged first prize in this month's Fishing Bonanza.
SHE looks like a beautician with long, elegant brown hair, perfectly manicured nails and tailored suits when she goes about her day job, but don’t end on the other side of her baited hook, because she gets her catch, hook, line and sinker.
The formidable Liza Labuschagne bagged first prize in this month’s Fishing Bonanza after reeling in the biggest salmon, weighing in at 9,8kg – and also hooked the first prize for the biggest fish in the ladies category.
Liza rode the waves with Team Wasabi, under command of skipper Leon Vorster and his son Eben.
Also on the crew was Liza’s dad, Lappies Labuschagne, and it is easy to see that sea water runs in the family veins.
‘My brother Andrè was supposed to also be part of the crew, but had a vehicle accident. He almost tore of his toe and had to support us from his hospital bed in his Team Wasabi T-shirt.’
After winning, Liza cheered him up with his favourite dish – sushi.
When Liza talks fishing, it is evident that a bad day of fishing beats a good day at the office for this lady any day, and she excitedly shares fishermen stories in her slight rolling West Coast burr, flashing a white smile.
‘It was the best Bonanza ever!’
Indeed, for Team Wasabi, the Bonanza was like shooting fish in a barrel.
‘Skipper Leon Vorster pulled out a huge snoek of 8,4kg, while Eben snatched the first prize for unspecified species with his 9,6kg Kawa Kawa tuna,’ she brags like a full-blooded fisherman.
A former police captain with field experience, she is also a deadly shot, but she has a much softer side.
She is passionate about animals, especially dogs, and has a heart for even the toughest of canines with anger issues.
She owns a beautiful white timber wolf called Nuschka and Ossie, the Jack Russell.
In her spare time, she is known to cook up a mean dish of fish – of course.
