POLICE have arrested a 41-year-old suspect in connection with a fatal hit-and-run incident on a Birdswood road on Saturday night.
The victim, Rodney Bentley (55), was walking between Nkoninga and Wagtail when a car knocked him into a light pole at around 8.30pm.
He reportedly died on impact.
Two eyewitnesses at the scene told Alpha Security and Patrols that the Golf that struck Bentley stopped shortly after the collision.
A female passenger allegedly climbed out of the vehicle and looked the man over using her cellphone’s light.
Witnesses said she then got back into the car, which drove off.
On Sunday the driver of the vehicle was apprehended and charged with culpable homicide.
The Richards Bay police said more charges could follow.
RIP messages
Messages of condolences poured onto Bentley’s Facebook page as news spread of his tragic death.
Outlook Church’s Pastor Brent Brading also expressed his sadness over the incident.
‘Rodney lived on our church property and always helped out here. He was loved by many and we will really miss him.
‘Sadly his wife passed away only last year and we were still grieving her death, so this comes as double blow.’
Pastor Brading said Bentley’s memorial details will be confirmed and shared with the public later this week.
