Zeus wins Inhaca Island Yacht Race

Fast finish for 25th Inhaca yacht race.

SKIPPER Don Voysey and the crew of Zeus beat the fleet and the weather when they crossed the line first on Saturday at the end of the 25th Inhaca Island Yacht Race.

Sailing for the hosts, Zululand Yacht Club, Zeus completed the approximate 220 nautical mile race from the Inhaca Lighthouse to the north breakwater of Richards Bay harbour in a time of 23 hours and 16 minutes.

With a strong southwester expected, four of the 12 yachts decided to cruise down early, a day before the official start on Friday.

As it turned out, the weather played along and with a generous north-easter at their backs the boats all returned safely and in good time to the Zululand Yacht Club.

Prize-giving on Sunday was a jolly affair, with the normal ‘war stories’ and reports of mini disasters adding to the good-natured banter.

While Zeus took line honours, winner on handicap was Jon Marshall of Majimoto, who with Greg Donkin and the crew of Alkistis finishing third on handicap, ensured Point Yacht Club beat the hosts for the best club.

Final overall standings on corrected times were:

1 Majimoto, 2 Zeus, 3 Alkistis, 4 Silhouette, 5 Nomad, 6 So Basic, 7 Downwind Flyer, 8 Ypsilanti, 9 Island Quest, Andrea Helena, Garuda, Watamu.
