Super swimmers go for gold

Five Zululanders participated in the SA Masters Swimming Championships.

LOCAL swimmers brought back the gold after participating in the 31st SA Masters Swimming Championships at Ellis Park Swimming Pool in Johannesburg from 17 – 21 March.

The popular event ended in an open water swim at Lake Victoria in Germiston.

Swimmers from the age of 19 to 90 participated this year, with the SA Masters swimming motto of ‘fitness, fun and fellowship’ paving the way.

The five Zululanders who participated included Shirley Carey (silver medals for 100 m backstroke, 50m backstroke, Women Freestyle Relay and a bronze medal in the Women Medley Relay), Anthony Baker (a gold medal for 200m breaststroke, bronze medals for 100m and 50m breaststroke), Sue Robinson (bronze medal for the open water swim), Bronwen Griffiths (bronze medal for the open water swim) and Barbara Berridge (silver for the Women Medley Relay and bronze medals for the 50m Breaststroke and the Mixed Medley Relay).

The relay team included Shirley Carey (Empangeni), Alison McBey (Winterton), Juanine Schaanick (Durban) and Sally Ralfe (Winterton).

The team took home silver medals for the women’s freestyle relay.

Next year the 32nd SA Masters Swimming Nationals will be held at Kings Park in Durban.
