Filmmakers scout out Zulu culture

'Nollywood' film industry stopped off at Shakaland.

A HIGH-POWERED delegation of 35 Nigerians involved in the ‘Nollywood’ film industry stopped off at Shakaland outside eShowe recently as part of a seven-day fact finding mission to KZN.

The delegation included, among others, producers, actors and bankers.

Shakaland, which was used as the set for the mini-series Shaka Zulu, was part of the Nigerians’ experience in KZN and was arranged by Noxy Mavundla, Manager of the Zulu Coast Film Office based at the uThungulu District Municipality. Kealeboga Bogatsu, the Chief Financial Officer of the KZN Film Commission also accompanied the group.

They experienced the vibrant dance show in the big hut before enjoying some Zulu cuisine.

In the afternoon they were given insight into Zulu culture, which culminated with Zulu beer tasting with the chief.

Co-operation

While in Durban, the delegation met film role-players in the province and also exchanged ideas and experiences at a conference held at the Elangeni Hotel.

Leader of the delegation, Mahmood Ali-Balogun of Brickwall Communications and Chairman of the Audio Visual Rights Society of Nigeria, says that the SA film industry is too reliant on government funding.

He said in Nigeria filmmakers have to fund their own films or obtain sponsorships.

Initially the ‘Nollywood’ industry concentrated on quantity, but has now started improving the quality of their products.

Nigerians are encouraged to support local movies and audiences in their cinemas are increasing.

Addressing the issue of co-operation between the two countries, he said both countries should benefit from the visit.

The ideas shared during their discussions should bring in much business to KZN and Zululand.
