Hobies head for rough waters
Point Yacht Club Hobie Epic takes place on Thursday 19 February.
THE sixth annual Point Yacht Club Hobie Epic, racing between Durban to Richards Bay, is set to take place on Thursday 19 February.
The small fleet of catamarans manned by brave, adrenalin-fuelled yachties, will set sail at either end, depending on wind direction.
They will either start (north easterly) or finish (south westerly) at the Zululand Yacht Club.
Should the weather be calmed, they will be on standby right until Sunday 22nd waiting for the wind.
The rules are easy, launch at one of the yacht club sites and sail non-stop up or down to the finish at either the Richards Bay Harbour mouth or at the beach landing at Vetch’s.
All boats are fitted with a tracking device to keep an eye on them, with race support shadowing them as they sail along one of the most treacherous coastlines in the world.
Due to a clash with the popular nine-hour event at Midmar, only about eight boats are expected, with the tigers usually taking six to eight hours to complete the trip and the Hobie 16s a couple of hours longer.
