Pongola councillor found guilty of theft

The councillor allegedly stole a storage container used by the Zululand District Municipality and ordered it to be placed at his personal payphone business.

LUKE Nxumalo, a councillor at Pongola Local Municipality, has reportedly been found guilty of theft in a court of law.

KwaZulu-Natal Democratic Alliance (DA) has called for KZN Premier, Senzo Mchunu to remove Nxumalo with immediate effect.

The councillor allegedly stole a storage container used by the Zululand District Municipality and ordered it to be placed at his personal payphone business.

He was arrested after council opened a case of theft against him.

Sizwe Mchunu MPL, leader of the DA in the KZN Legislature, said, ‘The DA regards the actions of this councillor as unforgivable.

‘Councillors are supposed to represent the interests of the community they serve yet this individual seems to believe that what belongs to the municipality is there for the taking.’

Mchunu added that, by stealing from the municipality, Nxumalo has shown himself to be an ‘enemy of the poor in Pongola and an obstacle to the marginalised receiving a better life’.

Mchunu called for both the KZN Premier and CoGTA MEC Nomusa Dube-Ncube to act in the interests of the people of Pongola and make an example of Nxumalo by removing him from office.

‘Any public servant who steals from the people must be removed from office, starting with Councillor Nxumalo’.
