JUST as an eShowe supermarket was preparing to open for business on Sunday morning, a gang of around eight robbers forced their way through the front door as the security guard was allowing employees into the store.
It is believed the total number of robbers could be as high as 15 people, including getaway drivers.
The robbers made off with an undisclosed amount of cash.
It is not clear how much of the money was pension money which was to be paid out that morning.
Residents living along Kangella Street report that it sounded like the ‘wild west’ as the gang exited the town.
Vehicles tyres screeching and gunshots added to the mayhem, which had many ducking behind the garden walls for cover in their yards.
Three of the robbers’ vehicles are believed to have rammed each other as they slowed for speed bumps in Kangella Street.
One was left in the vicinity of the Natural Arch Drive. A second vehicle was found next to the road near Mpushini Park.
All the suspects escaped and no one was injured.
There have been no arrests and police are following all leads.
