67 blankets for Madiba

Locals gear up for the 67 Blankets for Nelson Mandela day movement.

LOCAL ladies have been hard at work as they knit and crochet hundreds of squares for the annual international 67 Blankets for Nelson Mandela Day movement.

The blankets, aimed to be completed by February, will be taken to Pretoria where they will be displayed on the steps of the Union Buildings to honour the late Madiba.

A goal of 21 000 blankets has been set for South Africa, with the hopes of securing a spot in the Guinness Book of World Records.

After the blankets are returned from Pretoria, they will be donated to the Zululand Observer’s charity arm, DICE (Do I Care Enough?) where they will be donated to those in need on Nelson Mandela Day (18 July).

Zululand completed a total of 83 blankets last year, with Nelson Mandela’s legacy living on in each blanket the community produces.
