Focus on schools rugby development
Boosting rugby in schools was a key topic at the Rotary Club of Empangeni's first meeting this year
SCHOOLS rugby development was a key focus point at the Empangeni Rotary Club’s first meeting of the year held last Tuesday.
Guest speaker, Rugby Development Officer for uThungulu District Charles Mndaweni, gave a presentation illustrating the aims and aspirations of the Empangeni Rugby Football Club to develop rugby in schools in the region.
‘Mndaweni is a dedicated young man, passionate about rugby and a desire to promote the game in schools where rugby has never been offered,’ said Rotarian Rose Cyrus.
Highlighted in his talk was the fact that youngsters cannot be expected to suddenly begin to play rugby without having developed an understanding of the game.
‘They have to start with the basics from a young age,’ said Mndaweni
‘My desire is to have many youngsters – boys and girls – involved in learning the skills. However, the main challenges are finding experienced coaching staff and sufficient funding to take the youngsters to matches and tournaments.
This will provide the players with the opportunity to play as a team, competing against other developmental teams from Zululand.’
Any assistance in helping these children achieve their dreams of one day possibly playing for the Rhinos, or even the Sharks, would be greatly appreciated.
Those who wish to contact Mndaweni can do so through the Empangeni Rugby Club on 035 7923011.
