Three arrested after Nongoma shoot-out

Security guards robbed at Nongoma Mall yesterday.

THREE men will appear in Nongoma Magistrates’ Court today facing charges of armed robbery, attempted murder, possession of unlicensed firearms and ammunition as well as possession of property suspected to be stolen.

This comes after two security guards were robbed of the cash they were collecting from a shop at Nongoma Mall yesterday morning.

According to police spokesman, Colonel Jay Naicker, five suspects approached the guards and managed to rob them of a box containing an undisclosed amount of money. The suspects then fled the scene in a white VW Jetta.

‘The Ulundi Tactical Response Team and Nongoma police were alerted and they located the vehicle in the vicinity. A chase occurred with the suspects opening fire on the police. Police returned fire and in the process a 30-year-old suspect was fatally wounded. A second suspect was also arrested while three others managed to flee on foot into the nearby bushes,’ he said.

An AK47 rifle was recovered from the scene.

Later in the evening, the three suspects were spotted in Nongoma driving a Toyota Corolla.

‘Another gun battle ensued and one of the suspects was wounded, while a second suspect was arrested. The third suspect managed to flee the scene on foot,’ said Col Naicker.

A 9mm pistol was  recovered at the scene of the second shooting.

The wounded suspect was taken to hospital for treatment and is under police guard.
