FOUR suspects were arrested in Nongoma after the Ulundi Public Order Police, Ulundi K9 Unit and the Ulundi Crime Intelligence Unit received information about unlicensed firearms and ammunition.
According to police spokesperson Major Thulani Zwane, the first bust was made in the Dongothule area, where one suspect was found with a 9mm pistol loaded with 15 rounds of live ammunition.
‘The firearm was found under the bed and the man was immediately arrested.’
Police members then proceeded to the Matsheketshe area, where three suspects were sleeping in the same room.
‘Police entered the house and asked permission to search the property, upon searching, a 303 rifle with 77 live rounds of ammunition, a 9mm pistol with six live rounds of ammunition and one .38 special with a live round of ammunition were seized. The suspects, aged between 16 and 34 years, were arrested. ‘
The KZN Provincial Commissioner, Lieutenant General Mmamonnye Ngobeni applauded the police for their good work in arresting the suspects and the seizure of illegal firearms in the province.
‘We will continue to raid homes where people are suspected of having illegal firearms, and those found in possession will be charged. I also praise the communities for supplying us with information about illegal firearms which are circulating in the hands of criminals,’ said Lieutenant General Ngobeni.
