Grantleigh top Curro school in the country
Curro education group has 30 schools in its stable.
GRANTLEIGH has been named as the top Curro school in the country for academic excellence following the outstanding achievements of its pupils in the final IEB examinations.
The local school is the only Curro school in the Zululand region and one of five in KZN.
The Curro education group currently has 30 schools in its stable nationwide.
‘A combination of talent, dedication and a well-structured matric programme paved the way to excellence,’ Executive Head Shaun McMurtry told the Zululand Observer.
‘The 2014 matric class achieved a 100% pass rate and 96.9% Bachelor Degree passes. This was a group we really expected a lot from.
‘Last year’s matriculants achieved 128 subject distinctions and the top achiever, Kristien van der Walt, earned eight, claiming the honours as the top pupil in Curro and commended by the IEB for her achievement of being in the top 60 of all IEB candidates nationally,’ McMurtry said.

With the aim of establishing a footprint in KZN, negotiations with Curro Holdings in 2013 culminated in Grantleigh Schools joining the group as one of its select schools with effect from January last year.
Curro’s three-year infrastructure development plan is already underway as Grantleigh celebrated the opening of the first international standard Astroturf hockey field, newly built change rooms, refurbished tennis courts and six new class rooms.
Further developments, including two new boarding houses, resurfacing the schools’ road and Phase 1 of the custom designed Arts and Culture Centre, are expected to be completed by 2017.
‘Our main goal is to provide world class facilities and to achieve standards of excellence in order to keep our talent in Zululand,’ said McMurtry.
Headgirl Anri Ehlers said it was a huge honour to be part of such a high achieving academy and was ecstatic when she heard the news.
‘It’s going to be tough for this year’s matric class to keep the flag flying, but we have an enthusiastic class and work very well together.’
