A RANDOM police search led to a major drug bust in eSikhaleni on Wednesday.
Three suspects were arrested when the Crime Prevention Unit recovered bags of whoonga and dagga in the Madukwini and eMzingwenya areas.
According to the police, the suspects had enough drugs in their possession to be charged with dealing.
Dolly Mpinki (52), Simphiwe Mthethwa (21) and Mvuselelo Ngema (19) briefly appeared in the eSikhawini District Magistrate’s Court yesterday and will remain in custody until their formal bail hearing.
‘We confiscated ready made whoonga in eMadukwini when we searched a group of youngsters at a bus shelter.
‘We then decided to go around the township searching for more suspicious groups and eventually arrested two more people in Mzingwenya, including the older woman,’ said team leader, Capt Dumisani Mhlongo.
Mhlongo said whoonga was a major contributor to criminal activities in the area.
‘This is only a beginning, and the team is ready to sweep all drugs from the streets.
‘We will target more places because we believe that these drugs are the source of burglaries, robberies, rapes and murders in this area.
‘We also aim to visit schools, because many drug dealers operate in the vicinity of schools.’
