THE road to success has been a bumpy ride for Old Mill High School pupil Wlliam Siyabonga Ncube (18), fraught with financial potholes and family challenges. However, life’s humps motivated him to work hard and accelerate to success.
The young eSikhaleni lad was declared the second best achiever in his school, and scooped six distinctions. Motivated by his disadvantaged background, William said education was the only way to reach his goal of being an environmentalist.
‘My family always taught me to work hard in life and turn challenges so that they work for me. My parents always said education can open any door. I had their support throughout the year, especially from my mother,’ said William.
The overwhelmed achiever said sometimes he didn’t have enough money to go to school, but this motivated him to start saving at an early age.
‘I saved most of my pocket money, just in case my parents didn’t have money. I wanted to do the best and make them proud. I never thought I would take the second though, and I thank God for everything,’ he said.
All roads leads to the University of KwaZulu-Natal (UKZN) for William, where he will study towards a degree in social science, geography and environmental management.
