New disaster centre in Hluhluwe

The campaign is designed to aid both municipalities and the general public in learning to anticipate natural disasters.

KZN COGTA (Co-operative Governance and Traditional Affairs) launched its Summer Disaster awareness campaign on Tuesday at the official opening of a state-of-the-art disaster centre in Hluhluwe.

Drawing on the expertise of the USA’s 911 Fund, COGTA’s Disaster Management and Fire and Rescue Services Centre in uMkhanyakude will help raise awareness of natural disasters in the province.

‘We are excited to launch another fully-equipped disaster management centre and to take the message of awareness and preparedness in respect of natural disasters to the people of KZN,’ said COGTA MEC Nomusa Dube-Ncube.

‘We want everyone to be able to play their part in mitigating the impact of disasters through advanced disaster management’.

The campaign is designed to aid both municipalities and the general public in learning to anticipate natural disasters, such as the lightning strikes that claimed the lives of two people in Nquthu before Christmas.

A swift response to disasters is the campaign’s focus and is based on international best practice facilitated in KZN through the US-based 911 Fund.
