TWO young men set off from Richards Bay on Sunday bound for Harare, a daunting month-long cycle trip in aid of cancer awareness.
But Jed Johnson and Cameron Stuart appeared unfazed at the prospect of tired legs and blistered hands, not to mention the possibility of encountering ‘road hogs’ and potential unfriendly interference.
‘We did a similar ride before, in 2012, from Cape Town to Kosi Bay – exactly 2 234 kilometres,’ said Jed.
‘So we know what to expect, and although our families are a bit stressed about it, our previous experience on the road taught us that the people we meet are kind and helpful.’
The pair will document the ride by way of photos and videos and their prime aim is to promote the Cansa ‘Sunsmart’ campaign, highlighting prevention of skin cancer.
They also encourage donations to the good work done by the Cansa organisation, and request supporters of their journey to make a contribution to their nearest Cansa branch.
The young men travel light, carrying few spares and little food, and rely on the goodwill of the public for a place to rest their weary limbs each night.
‘Keep us in your prayers and check out our progress on www.facebook.cam/WingsAtOurFeet,’ said Cameron prior to their departure for Beit Bridge via Hluhluwe on Monday morning.
Any person able to give them contacts along the route can call Jed on 083 7115418 or Cameron on 074 4377388.
