Crime campaign pays dividends

eSikhaleni police special team in a mission to ensure a safe festive season

A NEW police campaign to reduce crime activities during the festive season has been launched in eSikhaleni.

The ‘stop and search’ drive aims to recover stolen goods, illegal weapons and drugs and prevent road accidents by hauling in drunk drivers.

According to team leader Capt Dumisani Mhlongo, roadblocks will be placed all over the township during the Christmas break. All vehicles will be searched to ensure a safer season.

The crime prevention team, on their first mission, already recovered an unlicensed firearm and ammunition during a roadblock near uMfolozi FET College on Tuesday.

A young man in a red Toyota Tazz was arrested after the gun and ammunition was found his car. Sbonakaliso Nsele was apprehended at KwaNdaye reserve, following a police chase.

‘The car fled the scene after we had stopped it. Our team pursued it and caught the man outside the township. We recovered the weapon inside his car,’ said Mhlongo.

Sbonakaliso Nsele was charged with being in possession of a firearm and ammunition. He appeared briefly in the eSikhiwini District Magistrate’s Court on Wednesday. His case was remanded until 22 December for a formal bail application.

‘This festive season we are against drunk drivers, drugs and unlicensed weapons. It is our mission to eliminate crime and make our streets safer for everyone. ‘Working together with the Department of Transport, we hope to make this a jolly break for everyone, free from weapons, drugs and any illegal activities,’ said Mhlongo.
