‘Tis the season to be jolly – but also wise

THE holidaymaker influx along the Zululand coastline indicates a bumper festive season for local tourist establishments, operators and restaurateurs.

This is the time for family reunions, shopping sprees and all kinds of adventures and merriment.

However, all should remain mindful that exuberance requires responsible behaviour.

Like clockwork, this time of year produces the most horrific accidents, tragic drownings, robberies, drunken driving and all kinds of reckless behaviour which leaves its fair share of misery.

Zululand beaches will be crammed with holidaymakers in the run-up to Christmas and New Year and authorities have warned bathers to remain alert and aware of hazardous situations.

This includes the effects of dangerous spring tides, overcrowding, consuming alcohol while swimming, muggings and the monitoring of children at beaches.

Swimming in rivers and lakes should be approached with caution. Upcountry visitors unfamiliar with our region should note that many surrounding rivers and estuaries contain crocodiles and hippos for example. Heed the warning signs.

Anglers out at sea must ensure they follow safety protocols.

When letting one’s hair down at year-end parties, keep in mind the consequences of irresponsible actions, especially when taking to the roads.

Far too often this newspaper report on tragic accidents causing deaths or leaving people maimed.

Be smart and be safe.
