Twin ellies born in Pongola

Paternity of the twins points to Ingani, a 44-year-old elephant bull who died last year.

A PRIVATELY-OWNED  big-four game reserve, the Pongola Game Reserve has reported the birth of African elephant twins.

Scientific evidence suggests that there is less that 1% prevalence rate of elephants twinning and even less of a chance that both twins survive into adulthood.

This makes the birth an incredibly rare natural occurrence.

The yet unnamed twins were born to a 31-year-old elephant cow called Curve, so named for the curve of one of her tusks. She birthed three offspring before delivering the twins, all of which were male.

Paternity of the twins points to Ingani, a 44 year old elephant bull who died last year.

The sex of the twins remains unconfirmed as Curve is given enough space and a fighting chance to beat the mortality odds for the twins.

The last reported elephant twins were reported at Sabi Sabi in Mpumalalanga in January 2013.

The Pongola Game Reserve is owned and managed by the Landman family, whose original family members arrived and settled in Africa in 1735.

It is a registered Natural Heritage Site and it extends over part of the original area that, in 1894, was declared the Pongola Game Reserve by Paul Kruger, President of the old Transvaal Republic.
