RICHARDS Bay teen Carina du Plessis has come out of a coma a month after her accident in Richards Bay in early November.
Carina (19) sustained major injuries after her car skidded off a wet road and hitting a tree near Green Africa Nursery just after 6am on Sunday, 2 November.
She was immediately transported to Netcare the Bay Hospital where she is currently undergoing therapy.
Carina gained movement in her arms and legs and is responsive. While she is still kept on a ventilator, she is taking steps towards recovery every day.
‘All her infection is gone and although she is still on a ventilator, she smiles when we are around,’ said mother Erika, who has been by her side every day since the accident.
Carina has already undergone surgery to repair her jaw and her back has begun to heal slowly, although her collarbone is still very fragile.
Her next step is to continue with therapy and eventually get her to sit up straight.
