IT is at times like this that the public’s perception of an entire organisation such as Ezemvelo KZN Wildlife might become flawed by its all-inclusive condemnation of the people that work for it.
Nothing could be more misguided or factually incorrect.
For the past four years I have worked on behalf of Ezemvelo in the broad and varied role of a communications consultant.
Notwithstanding the present investigation of alleged financial malpractice, it is my heartfelt need to ask people to appreciate that this organisation is comprised of some of the finest, most passionate, highly qualified and committed conservationists imaginable.
Many examples of this collective character have been publicised over the years and it is beholden on all of us to step back and acknowledge this human worth.
I do not want to be accused of waving a ‘PR’ flag, but it is important for taxpayers and citizens alike to note the fundamental truth underlying the above statement.
Ezemvelo’s Game Capture Unit has been authoritatively described as the finest in the world; its Scientific Unit as exemplary and the most rigorous in South Africa, whilst a great number of its field and marine management and ranger staff are held up as some of the most qualified and capable in Africa.
The glare of controversy should never deaden these shining lights and people would do well to find great pride in this workforce that bravely and selflessly protects and manages our wonderful natural heritage.
