Among stiff competition, Retief Louw of Hluhluwe was placed second in a countrywide maths competition after scoring an impressive 92.5%.
Retief, a Grade 7 pupil at Hluhluwe Private School, wrote the advanced mathematics exam organised by the prestigious SA Akademie vir Wetenskap en Kuns (SA Academy for Science and Art) in October.
The Maths-in-Action competition was a national event and Retief competed in the region which included KZN, Gauteng, Mpumalanga and Limpopo.
Retief’s second place in his region was announced on 15 November during a maths fun day at the University of Pretoria.
Retief’s classmates, Sthembile Skhosana and Joy Wumenu also excelled, achieving scores of 82.5% and 72.5% respectively. These achievements have certainly put Hluhluwe Private School on the map.
The Academy started the Maths-in-Action a few years ago in order to identify Grade 6 and 7 pupils with special maths skills. The competition is based on the longstanding high school maths olympiads.
