WITH the annual Movember challenge already in full swing, CANSA uThungulu in partnership with the Zululand Observer and Inkwazi Boardwalk Shopping Centre has come up with another event to highlight this month of men’s cancer awareness.
Targeting males over 40 years of age, the aim is to set a record for the number of men who undergo a PSA (prostate-specific antigen) test to detect the possibility of prostate cancer development.
Qualified nurses will be on hand at the centre between 9am and 1pm to take blood samples which will be sent away for testing.
The procedure is quick and painless and the message is: a simple blood test could save your life.
‘An increased level does not necessarily point towards cancer; it could be due to non-cancerous growths, irritation, enlargement of the prostate or inflammation,’ said CANSA uThungulu Community Mobiliser, Lizelle van Zyl.
‘But why take a chance? As with all cancers, early detection can be the difference between life and death.
‘It can also make a major difference to one’s sexual life, which adds to the importance of having the test.
‘This might also be a determining factor in getting men to participate in large numbers!’
CANSA is asking participants to donate R100 to cover the costs of the tests and the promotion.
The Rotary clubs of Empangeni and Richards Bay have committed to supporting the event.
