The tortoise beats the hare

Shaun Francis took on Leo Mattioda in a charity challenge yesterday.

THE challenge was set, the route measured and marked with both athletes geared up and ready to take pain for charity.

Leo Mattioda laid down a R10 000 challenge to anyone brave enough to challenge him in a 4km time trial race, with R5 000 being donated to the uMhlathuze Athletics Club and R5 000 to the Heuwelland Primary School feeding scheme.

Empangeni town hero Shaun Francis manned up and stood up to the challenge.

Last night it was an unfit and out of shape Francis against a trim and fit Mattioda at Addison Park.

But knowing the tale about the tortoise (Shaun) and the hare (Leo), one would know that Francis was the one to back.

The two pushed neck and neck and worked hard along the 4km route, not giving the other an edge.

But in the end, it came down to a photo finish, with Shaun Francis claiming the win.

Shaun ran 25.33, with Leo crossing the line in 25.34.
