A FUNCTIONING electricity supplier is probably South Africa’s most pressing challenge at the moment.

In today’s modern world, no economy can survive without a consistent energy source.

Yet, without fail, the incompetence of Eskom’s senior management (and by default the government) continue to bedevil our country’s progress and turn the lives of ordinary citizens into a misery.

Thanks to Eskom’s lack of expertise, maintenance and forward planning, everything stops – the macro economy, the small business owners, matric pupils who have to study and the list goes on.

And apart from punishing the already hard-pressed consumers to keep on forking out blood money to fund the poor planning, the consumers pay an additional heavy price for losing expensive equipment such as fridges and computers because of the constant load shedding, for which they will never be refunded.

Although I realise this will be a futile request, there’s no harm in trying. Miracles can still happen when intelligent people steer the ship.

Even if it only relates to Eskom, because it is so crucial, can the government not make an exception and call a moratorium on transformation, nepotism or whatever one wants to call it, and call back all those expert and competent guys who were worked out – yes, even if their skin is white – to save us from the darkness?

At least they know what needs to be done and will use funds prudently instead of paying themselves millions in bonuses for non-performance.
