A Matshana man who tried to escape while being read his rights was shot by Empangeni police near Ngwelezane this morning.
The 23-year-old suspect who was wanted for residential burglary was nabbed by police at about 7am. He was further charged with escaping from local custody.
‘When he tried to escape, there was a shoot-out and he was injured in his buttocks,’ said Empangeni SAPS Spokesperson Captain Mbongeni Mdlalose.
The man is receiving medical attention at Ngwelezana Hospital and is under police protection.
Once he is discharged, he will remain in custody at the Empangeni police station.
