Justine takes top sports award

An eShowe athlete is Maties' Sportswoman of the Year.

ESHOWE’S track athlete Justine Palframan, who won the women’s 200m and 400m titles at both the University Sport SA (USSA) Championships and the South African Senior Championships in 2014, was named Maties ‘Sportswoman of the Year’.

The awards were made at Maties Sport’s annual awards dinner on Wednesday, 22 October.

New Chief Director of Sport, Ilhaam Groenewald, was the guest speaker at the event.

‘With the establishment of this position the SU leadership recognises the value of sport in elevating the profile of the university,’ she said.

She discussed some of Maties Sport’s goals for the future and said it is necessary that they develop best practices to ensure success.

‘Your attendance here is testament that athletes, coaches and management can be very important role models in times of difficulty and will in future contribute to a successful sport recipe in South Africa.

‘We desperately need you. This country desperately needs good, passionate leadership.

‘We need to continue to develop sport as a strategic asset (at SU). Join hands with us to take SU to the next level,’ she said.

Tribute was paid to Jackie Wiese, the outgoing Director: Sport who has been with Maties Sport for 34 years.
