Rapid rise in lake level

Solid rains boost Lake Mzingazi levels.

THE good rains of the past 10 days have resulted in a significant rise in the level at Lake Mzingazi, the main water source for Richards Bay.

From being close to empty, the lake is recovering well after more than 150mm fell in Meerensee and downpours entered from the catchment area.

From its lowest level in about 50 years, the lake level has lifted by more than 1.5-metres following the deluge on 16 and 17 October – a massive rise considering that Lake Mzingazi has a surface area of about 1 100ha.

The lake has a maximum depth of eight metres and a capacity of around 37-million cubic metres.
