Brits outlast Boer forces

THOSE who thought the Anglo-Boer War came to an end at the turn of the last century and was now only a reference in history books, is mistaken.
For some descendants of the old warriors, peace has never been declared and they are determined that the war of attrition continues – right her in Zululand.
The latest skirmish between the Boere and the Souties took place on 5 October when the opposing troops exchanged fire at the Empangeni Bowls Club.
The battle format both sides agreed to would be rolling canon balls at a ‘white thingy’.
Bowlers kitted up in traditional clothing, but live ammunition, explosives and other dangerous weapons were confiscated at the gate, purely because the green keeper would have none of any activity which may cause damage to his domain.
Players had to rely on skill and determination, with no one giving an inch.
Competitors followed a Pro 10 two bowl trips format, with each army fielding five ‘batallions’.
The first round of games ended in a draw, with both teams gathering five points each.
The Brits made their move in the second round, winning three games to claim a slender two point lead heading into round three.
The Boers fought back bravely, to claim the third round and level the overall score.
The fourth and final round was very tense, with the Brits taking it by three games to two.
This left the scoreboard reading 21 points plus 44 for the Brits and 19 points plus 43 for the Boers, thereby earning the Brits the floating trophy for 2014.
This tournament will become an annual feature on the club’s calendar as the Boers refuse to surrender.
The next big tournament at the club will be the Turkey Day planned for 16 December.
