Toddler dies in house fire

The 12-year-old child was reportedly watching TV at a neighbour's house when the fire started.

A FOUR-YEAR-OLD child was burned to death on Wednesday in a house fire in Ezwenelisha near St Lucia.

On Monday evening the electrical box at Smangele Zungu’s house was struck by lightning and burnt out during during severe thunderstorms.

To get it fixed, she had to hand in an affidavit, signed by police officers, to the contractor.

On Tuesday, Zungu left her three children aged four, seven and 12 at home while she went to the police station.

It is believed that during strong winds, the candle Zungu and her children were using for light blew over and set the table cloth alight.

The 12-year-old child was reportedly watching TV at a neighbour’s house when the fire started.

After trying to put out the fire himself, the seven-year-old called out to neighbours for help, but none was forthcoming and the house burnt down with the four-year-old toddler still inside.

Emergency services arrived on scene, but were unable to save the child.

Department of Social Development Social Workers are working with Zungu, who apart from losing a child, lost all of her belongings.
