Rock danger on N2 highway

Rocks left on the N2 are damaging vehicles and leaving motorists stranded, easy targets for criminals

MOTORISTS using the N2 highway between Empangeni and Mtunzini had better keep their eyes peeled after a number of reports have been received of large rocks strategically placed on the N2 highway.

The rocks are big enough to do extensive damage to a vehicle, leaving the car and its occupants stranded.

According to a Mtunzini resident one such incident occurred last week when a couple were driving back from Empangeni.

‘My daughter and her boyfriend were driving on the N2 at about 9.30pm last week and hit the strategically placed rock or boulder covered in a plastic packet.

‘The car was extensively damaged, but they were able to keep control of the vehicle. The car finally came to a standstill approximately two to three kilometres further on. ‘Fortunately we were able to get to them and tow them to safety. The toll patrol told them that they were the fifth car to report such an incident that night.

‘The incident happened just before Bridge D,’ said the resident

According to Business Against Crime Manager Dave Whittaker, such incidents need to be reported to the police.

‘The police use intelligence to plan their operations. They look for trends over a certain time frame. If a problem is identified they will act accordingly, for example in this case more patrols would be added to that section of the highway. The more information the police have the better they are equipped.’
