Both apply to Chef Donald Bruins-Lich (46) who prides himself in creating mouth-watering dishes using the freshest ingredients.
A thriving Richards Bay-based restaurateur, Donald is all about flavour and fresh herbs.
A believer of experimenting with food, his signature dish of lamb rump with a lemon, rosemary, garlic and cream infusion has everyone licking their plate clean.
Growing up, Donald would have free range in the kitchen every Thursday and made his first meal of lemon and herb roast chicken with roasted potatoes and butternut and his favourite green pepper salad at age 14.
Inspired by the good works of Jamie Oliver in giving back to the community by training youth who are passionate about food, Donald also admires Gordon Ramsay’s approach in managing the kitchen.
‘He’s only temperamental because it’s hot in the kitchen,’ Donald chuckled.
He believes with the correct use of flavours and his advantage in understanding what Zululanders enjoy, he will undoubtedly be crowned champion at this year’s cook-off.
