I WOULD like to extend my gratitude to the men and women of the uMhlathuze Fire Department.

When arriving home from work this afternoon (15 September), I saw the smoke and commotion from afar.

The indigenous forest on the western side of Birdswood was ablaze, quickly moving towards the first line of houses.

Much to my dismay, this tranquil peace of greenery is no more.

Armed with my camera I strolled into the smoke-filled air – yes I know not the brightest thing to do – but nevertheless found more than just pictures.

Engaging with the fire team deep in the forest, I saw to my amazement a woman of small stature bravely wielding the fire hose in the direction of the flames (lady with brown vest in photo).

Obviously it is teamwork that gets the job done – from the truck driver, men in the command centre to the guys and gals facing the flames.

Thank you guys for putting your life on the line on a daily basis, and well done for saving Birdswood from becoming Firewood.
