Mtuba shooter in court

An attempted murder could have been prevented if a protection order had been served.

ERIC Mnculwane of Macekane near Empangeni has been charged with attempted murder in the Mtubatuba Magistrate’s Court two days after shooting a KwaMsane man in the chest on 24 August.

He was denied bail on Tuesday and the case was remanded to 29 September pending a medical report.

The victim’s girlfriend was studying under Mnculwane, a sangoma.

‘He tried to force me to love him and when I denied him, he became abusive and threatened to kill me if I told anyone’ said the woman. Two weeks before the shooting she filed for a protection order in Empangeni, as she felt her life was in danger, but the order was allegedly never served.

On the morning of the shooting it is alleged that Mnculwane visited the couple and drew a firearm and shot the victim after an argument.

The victim was rushed to a nearby hospital in a critical condition, but survived and was discharged last week.

Immediately after the shooting the police were notified and a description of the suspect and his vehicle with GP registration plates provided.

The police tracked down Mnculwane, searched his vehicle and found the firearm attached to his waist.
