Walking the talk

Sanca drug event a walkaway success.

GALE force winds notwithstanding, Saturday’s SANCA/Bay Watch ‘Walk Away From Drugs’ event was a huge and happy occasion.

More than 250 walkers took part in this the 8th annual event, where the community’s stand against drug and alcohol abuse was also supported by banners and slogans as they strolled from the Zululand Yacht Club around Naval Island and back.

Floraton Primary, with the highest number of pupil entrants, took the BHP Billiton-sponsored big prize of a computer, printer and scanner, plus a computer desk courtesy of Richards Bay IDZ.

Veldenvlei Primary were runners-up, earning a camera from Tata Steel KZN and 10 boxes of A4 paper from Mondi Richards Bay.

In the corporate category, BHP Billiton had the most number of entrants, while the Kobus Riekert Karate Institute team were voted ‘best spirit’ and the Zululand Observer won ‘best banner’.

All the participants took home a medal in recognition of their efforts, courtesy of BHP Billiton.
